Reading Hospital Bldg. N Arrival Garden Reading, PA
The addition of a sparkling new cancer center (Building N) designed by Ballinger sparked the development of a welcome garden in the bustling patient drop-off and retrieval area commonly referred to as “N Arrival.” Design was strongly influenced by the bold architectural gestures of the cancer center, and reflects—quite literally, in the pool—its clean, modern lines and gleaming glass. The garden also successfully unites the cancer center with the older Building R, and provides a comfortable area in which to rest or wait for one’s ride.
A variety of hardscape and landscape solutions have been integrated: paved walkway, stepping stones, water feature, walls, trees and planting beds. The water feature and its accompanying channel are an acknowledgement of nearby Wyomissing Creek. The water streams downward from the shallow bowl into the channel and then into a still pool, where it is then reused. Were the stream to continue, it would flow directly over the site and into the creek across the street.
