Kingsmill on the James Williamsburg, VA

English colonist Richard Kingsmill settled this 2,900-acre plantation on the banks of the James River in 1736. Minutes from historic Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and the College of William and Mary, Kingsmill on the James has become one of Virginia’s most sought-after golf resorts and residential communities. The development features four Reese Jones golf courses and neighborhoods offering a variety of housing types.

In addition to developing a site master plan and golf course planning, a key task for Wells Appel was to revise entry elements and sequencing to engender a more memorable arrival experience. A circular common on a bluff overlooking the river was created and became the scenic locus for the resort’s golf clubhouse, tennis center, conference center and spa, for which we also provided design and construction documentation.
