Cooper Street Historic District Camden, NJ
In the mid-1800s, Cooper Street was one of Camden’s most prestigious thoroughfares, lined with beautiful mansions, estates and gardens. By the late 20th century its aspect had changed from quiet residential to predominantly institutional and commercial uses.
As part of an urban streetscape master plan for 13 city blocks in the Cooper Street Historic District, Wells Appel developed guidelines for improvements to restore the street’s historic character with period lighting, paving, site furnishings and reintroduce the English-style front yard garden.
The project was funded by an ISTEA grant through a partnership with the city of Camden and Rutgers University.
