Kutztown University Alumni Plaza Kutztown, PA
In 1997 the Kutztown University Foundation, working closely with the Office of Alumni Relations, initiated a design competition for creation of a plaza destined to become the campus’s gateway and a central gathering place for students, faculty, visitors and the community at large. The project, which was funded 100 per cent by alumni donations manifested in donor pavers, was completed in October 2003.
The one-acre site, originally a transitional area between the campus’s academic and residential facilities, was transformed into an open, lively, welcoming space artfully juxtaposing planted areas and hardscape. It accommodates a variety of uses year-round.
Alumni Plaza is the focal point of the project, with its combination of fixed and fluid surfaces and a mesmerizing water feature that invites both participation and contemplation. When the water is turned off, the plaza serves as a mini-amphitheater for large gatherings and performances.
