White House Landing Area Washington, DC

Bell-Boeing, in conjunction with the White House Military Office, conducted conceptual design studies to determine the feasibility of replacing the current VH-3D Sea King helicopter fleet with the newer, much heavier V-22 Osprey. The primary purpose of the feasibility study was to analyze the opportunities and constraints associated with landing the V-22 on the south lawn of the White House.

Recommendations were made regarding two primary areas of mission concern: landing weight impact mitigation and ground-wash impact mitigation, and the effect on the White House south lawn and landscape.

As project leader, Wells Appel coordinated an interdisciplinary team and collaborated with them to assess the landscape and develop a strategy for landing the aircraft without damage to the historic trees and lawn.

We also prepared recommendations for a Heritage Tree Program to preserve the long-term integrity of this historic landscape.
