Pennswood Village Newtown, PA
Master planning and landscape architectural design on 82 acres for a Quaker-directed retirement community in Bucks County. The project was initiated as a result of two things: the township’s regional stormwater study following a 1996 flood that identified at-risk areas downstream from Pennswood, and Pennswood’s subsequent site redevelopment and expansion plans.
Wells Appel, with a consulting team of plant ecologists, wildlife biologists, environmental planners and civil engineers, reconfigured the entry road sequence to Pennswood Village and designed a 20-acre stormwater quality management system. The award-winning regional solution addressed technical challenges while promoting ecology, land stewardship, passive recreation and intergenerational education opportunities.
Native plants and locally-available hardscape materials were specified for both the stormwater management meadows as well as the landscaped gardens and focal areas within the existing and newly-constructed phases of the retirement community itself.
