Longwood Gardens Webb Farm Ecological Restoration Kennett Square, PA

This landscape restoration and design project was prompted by the relocation of a half-mile portion of State Route 52, which bisects the eastern half of Longwood Gardens, one of the world’s foremost horticultural showcases. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2009.

The client’s main goal is to preserve and protect the physical, ecological and cultural aspects of the 19th century agricultural landscape. The solution restores the landscape scar where the road will be removed; provides grading and planting plans that promote unobstructed vistas; and screens the view and sound of the new road from Longwood’s visitors and neighbors. The project maintains natural wildlife corridors and includes wetlands, stream, meadow and woodlands restoration.
