Merrill Lynch Southfields Hopewell, NJ

As the first phase of a 450-acre master plan, the concept for this 12-building campus drew inspiration from both academic campus and town center models, and reflects the financial services company's reputation of "bringing Wall Street to Main Street."

The buildings are sited on fee simple lots, each with its own street address, and are linked by a series of walkways. The town center contains a pedestrian plaza that features a café and personal service amenities such as a bank and drycleaner. Other public areas include a green commons, campus quadrangle, softball and soccer fields, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts and a very popular jogging trail.

The preservation of existing woodlands and wetlands revealed the location and configuration of the new perimeter road. A grand allee of oaks defining the main entrance road stand in contrast to the native grasslands of the perimeter landscape, which were designed to reflect the agrarian character of the township.

Sustainability, best management practices for storm water management, and low-maintenance landscapes were project goals that inspired the creative use of native plant materials, a woodlands management plan, and infiltration basins to take advantage of the site's location at the high point of a regional watershed.
